Shiv Nadar is an Indian entrepreneur whose name is synonymous with the founding of HCL and the development of India’s technology sector. His professional career began at a time when the country’s computer market was just taking shape. Nadar was among the entrepreneurs who recognized computing as a field with great commercial potential.
Since the 1990s, he has devoted a significant portion of his attention to education and philanthropic projects. Through the foundation he established, the entrepreneur supports educational institutions and programs aimed at talented college students and high school students.
Shiv Nadar’s Childhood and Education
Shiv Nadar was born on July 14, 1945, in the village of Mulaipozhi, which at the time was part of the Madras Presidency of British India. Today, this area is part of the state of Tamil Nadu. He grew up in a Tamil family and was educated at several schools.
Nadar spent his school years in various cities in southern India. He attended Town Higher Secondary School in Kumbakonam, then continued his education at Elango Corporation School in Madurai and St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School in Trichy. After high school, he enrolled at American College in Madurai, where he earned a pre-university degree.
The next stage was his technical education. In 1967, Nadar graduated from the PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore with a degree in electrical engineering. His technical training subsequently became an important part of his professional career.
Early Career and First Steps in Entrepreneurship
After graduating from college, Shiv Nadar began working at Cooper Engineering, a company within the Walchand Group. This was his first significant work experience in an industrial setting. However, he did not stay in that salaried position for long.
Soon, Nadar decided to start his own business. Together with several friends and colleagues, he began developing an entrepreneurial venture called Microcomp. The company sold electronic calculators on the Indian market.
For Nadar, this period served as a kind of preparation for launching a larger enterprise. Working with computer hardware and electronics gave him a better understanding of the prospects of a rapidly changing market. Soon, together with his partners, he moved on to a project that would later become known around the world.
The Founding of HCL
HCL was founded in 1976. The initial investment amounted to 187,000 Indian rupees. The company started out as a hardware-focused business, but its growth gradually expanded beyond the production of computer hardware. Nadar and his partners were active at a time when the Indian IT industry was still in its infancy. Therefore, establishing a technology company required financial resources and an understanding of the direction in which the market would develop.
Over time, HCL evolved from a hardware manufacturer into a major IT enterprise. Nadar himself remained the company’s largest shareholder, although he later ceased to directly oversee its day-to-day management. International expansion began in 1980. HCL entered the international market through Far East Computers in Singapore, which was established to sell IT equipment. In its very first year of operation, the Singapore branch generated one million rupees in revenue for the company. This move demonstrated that an Indian technology company could operate beyond the domestic market and gradually expand its presence internationally.
Philanthropy as a Distinct Area of Focus
His work in the field of education has become part of Shiv Nadar’s broader philanthropic efforts. Since the mid-1990s, he has increasingly focused on building educational infrastructure and supporting social initiatives.
Through the Shiv Nadar Foundation, the entrepreneur channels funds to projects related to education and human capacity development. Over the years, the foundation’s total philanthropic commitments have exceeded one billion dollars. Nadar’s philanthropic activities include supporting educational institutions, establishing schools, providing scholarships, and assisting educational initiatives.
In 2025, Shiv Nadar and his family allocated 2,708 crore rupees to charitable causes through the foundation. This amount reflects the scale his philanthropic efforts have reached several decades after the founding of HCL.
